Hiding Behind Locked Doors

Open up to John 20:19-23

--

The story of Jesus comes from 4 first century gospels which all end with what?
Jesus unleashes the church out into the world

Read
Matthew 28:18-20
Mark 16:15
Acts 1:8

Matthew, Mark, Luke are the synoptics. The three gospels come from he same material with different vantage points

John stands apart.

John 20:21

John 20:19
Notice the language. The ‘disciples’

The word Christian is actually only in the bible three times. First time in Acts 11
The texts says the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch
Derogatory term but the disciples picked up the label

The word disciple is used over 300 times in the new testament
The word can be translated student or apprentice.
If you were a disciple you were to learn the teaching and then become like your teacher

v. 19
with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders
What do you notice? The disciples are hiding

v.19-21
Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!"20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21 Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you!

We need to understand the context here...
The early church was anything but Utopian
They were literally hiding and scared to death, doubting, unbelieving

What are the obstacles of the church going out into the world as God’s disciples?
Fear & Doubt

When have you doubted? What do you doubt about?
My story of doubt...

Do I actually believe Jesus is back from the dead?
When I doubt, my faith slips and holds me back from the mission of God.
We need faith to risk and to step out and see what god is going to do.

This is was the problem in the early church, Jesus had to prove it!
The natural bent of the church is to hide.
We see that all the time. Close the doors, do life together, be safe...

v. 21
As the Father has sent me, I am sending you
The word “sent” translates into greek and latin as the word missio.
What might that word mean?

We are all missionaries.
This is your calling in life from Jesus.
Am I called to go on mission in Indonesia or The Colombian....

v. 22
And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
What is the connection between the Spirit and the mission??
The only way mission is possible is to be filled with the Spirit of God

The theology of the incarnation is that Jesus is Emmanuel or God with us.
Jesus’ ability to do mission is that he is filled with the Spirit of God
The exact same spirit that was on Jesus is where?
What does that mean?

v. 23
"If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

What does Jesus mean?
Can be translated “have been forgiven”
Matthew 28 “All authority”
You and I carry authority to preach the gospel and to tell people that their sins have been forgiven

There are people who need an authoritative word saying based on the gospel you’re not right with God, and you need to repent!

Jesus’ point is, I am sending you out to preach the word to the world

Three Things...
1. We are called to live as disciples
80% of Americans claim to be Christians. What is the difference?

2. We do that together
What’s the first thing we read in verse 19?
If you want to grow to become like Jesus, you need to live in community
Where do you plug in? How are you growing??
The direction of Lift to build more house churches
Changing this group to come together around a mission.
Bringing your calling to the table

3. We are called to live on mission, not to hide behind locked doors
What are you doing to get out, go, and further the Kingdom??
Hebrews 10:23-25

How are we able to accomplish these things?
Filled with the Holy Spirit.
I have dreams for 2012. Dream gigantic dreams for your life because Jesus is back from the dead!

I want to grow as a husband
I want to see this group grow and make an impact in our community

May we live as disciples of Jesus in constant relationship with the Spirit living with the intention of acting on what we’ve been called to do.
